Curriculum by Subject
Listed is the curriculum overview by subject area. These are the curricula utilized by teachers to engage and advance instruction in the classroom.
Science
All students are curious about the world in which they live, which makes them natural scientists. Science helps them make sense of the world around them. It provides opportunities for students to investigate this world and explain how and why things happen. As they engage in the work of scientists, they
-
observe
-
ask questions
-
collect data
-
construct explanations
-
predict
-
experiment
-
reach conclusions, and
-
communicate their discoveries
Math
Students learn mathematics best when they have opportunities to “do math”. Students must work on challenging problems, share their thinking with others, and use their thinking to build and deepen understanding. This process will provide our students with the skills needed to go to college or enter the workforce better prepared.
English Language Arts
In English Language Arts (ELA) students learn to become effective readers and writers. Teachers use a balance of complex fiction and non-fiction texts in the classroom and teach reading, writing, vocabulary and discussion with an emphasis on using details and evidence from the text.
Art
All public school students should have access to high-quality arts education. Arts education refers to dance, moving image, music, theater, and visual arts. An arts education teaches creativity, cooperation, discipline, analysis, and other important life skills. Students also develop positive outlets for self-expression and exercise their voice.
Physical Education
Physical education (PE) is a required academic subject that teaches participation in lifelong, health-enhancing physical activity. In PE, students learn to work as a team, develop healthy personal fitness habits, and set fitness goals now and throughout their lives. PE is not recess, or a before- or after-school sports club.
